The Art of the Burger, Village Burger opens!

CSM had the pleasure of working on selecting the artwork for the interior of Village Burger on Maplewood Ave in Maplewood, NJ. Designer, Marisa Lafiosca of ML Interior Design did a gorgeous job keeping the space sophisticated, yet fun. The artwork we selected is clean, playful and iconic.
A much anticipated opening took place this week. Great burgers and all the accoutrements will keep this a favorite local hotspot!

Project: MACY'S, NYC , 2011

Because we have the pleasure of working with Macy's throughout the year with art and framing projects , we get some great seats for the Thanksgiving Day Parade. (this year was it 2nd row!). It is an early morning for sure, but well worth it once that first huge balloon comes peaking around the corner! This year there were several new balloons such as Paul Franks' Julius the Monkey and Tim Burtons' B. Boy (Balloon Boy) . It was fairly awesome to be seated close enough to Mr. Burton to see his reaction as his newest creation came floating by in grand scale!
In the next few weeks, CSM will be working on framing the parade photos that Macy's sends to their Sponsors as a thank you for being part of this amazing event!

Last night's LOVE event was a big success! We had a great turnout, almost double the photo donations from last year and managed to raise money and awareness about the organization and all it accomplishes. The local SOMA TV station attended (with affiliates for Summit and Chatham TV), interviewed CSM associates, LOVE board members and local photographers who were present and added to this great night by donating their works.

2011 KIPS BAY SHOWHOUSE : This seasons' NY City townhouse was a quite beautiful. Like the previous one we attended, the top floor and rooftop outdoor living spaces were our Fave!

In our Travels: Lots of new vintage and antique pieces via markets and fairs. CSM has been very busy searching and finding unique artwork , old bookplates , vintage purses...all being framed for the showroom.

NEW! Outdoor Metal Sculpture: Via live and email requests we have been on the lookout for large scale metal sculpture for the garden. Industrial in feel, our artist welds metal objects to create fine art sculpture.

NY LOVE Photo Auction a Success

This May's LOVE Photo Auction was held at the Metropolitan Pavillion in NYC. Up for bid were 97 beautifully diverse photos . Included were " one of a kind" images made exclusively for LOVE Art Works, recognizable iconic images as well as collectible fine art and editorial images. The evening raised money to send the LOVE Youth to camp and brought awareness to such a worthy cause.

Montclair, Adult School Interior Design Class visit to CSM

Last month CSM hosted an evening in the gallery for the Montclair Adult School Interior Design Class. Instructed by Montclair Designer, Alicja Truesdale the group spent the evening at CSM and discussed how art can define the spaces they are working on. We discussed how color and emotion can play an important role in what artwork is selected as well as hanging and installing . This is the second year that Ms. Truesdale has brought her students to CSM .

Cupcake Journey

On a recent visit to Chelsea Market on 9th Ave in NYC, I popped into a whimsical bakery, Eleni's. (www.elenis.com). Colorful layers of cupcakes, cookies and candy. They offer nut free as well as themed desserts.Cookies for every occasion. Despite the total visual pleasure of the space, the cupcakes were also quite delicious!. All of the recent popularity of cupcakes has inspired some of our artists to create some wonderful pieces of the nostalgic treat. Please inquire about the new sepia etchings of cupcakes, just in. The first run is already sold out!

Last night in conjunction with Alicja Crosby, of Alicja Crosby Interiors we (CSM Art & Frame) spoke to 14 members of the Millburn/Short HIlls Newcomers Neighbors Club. (www.newcomersencoreclub.org.) The evening was hosted at the home of Lily Ibrahim. The topic was about "How Color affects Design and Art. " Alicja discussed the color spectrum and how decorating with color affects our moods and how we utilize our spaces. CSM showcased pieces of art that could possibly evoke different moods in the rooms. The evening ended with a group exercise of pairing fabrics , rugs and accessories with wall colors and art. Cocktails and Light refreshments were served.

Project : Macy's, NYC

Each year we get the privilege of not only attending the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, but keeping the spirit alive through January by working with Macy's on a special project. After the holidays are over in December, CSM receives over 50 photographs of the balloons and floats to frame. CSM works with a fantastic local calligrapher, Betsy Porter Joseph, (www.bpjdesigns.com) who labels all the mats for each photo before getting framed. The name of the sponsor as well as the date of the parade are artfully written in pen and ink (not machine printed) . Each photo gets framed, wrapped, then distributed as thank you gifts to all the sponsors for being a part of the event. It is such a great project knowing that our framed piece will be hanging in the corporate offices of Sony Pictures, Disney Pixar, Sesame Street, McDonalds, DreamWorks Animation, Pillsbury and Marvel Entertainment, just to name a few. All through the year we frame up the flower show, fireworks and parade posters , some of which are autographed by the celebrities involved with Macy's and the specific events.

Handwriting Samples

We received such a tremendous response to the top photo from our last post (Art of Arranging VI ) , that we wanted to to let you know that these framed pieces are available at CSM. Our framed handwriting samples are based on a child's (John Moorhouse) practice book from 1732-33.
We also have a collection of "Dear Mamma and Dear Pappa" letters. They are based on originals written by Henry and Ann Wilding, brother and sisiter, to their parents during the 1820's. The children were approximately ten years old at the time and were writing from a boarding school in England. These letters were found in a collection of Wilding family archives. The letter reads: "Dear Parents, I hope this my first attempt will please you, as your approbation will contribute to the happiness of Your dutiful Boy, Henry Wilding."
These letters are elegant reminders(as you can see!) of an age when writing was beautiful and when even the crudest of handwriting looked good. We offer 4 different framing choices: contemporary silver, traditional silver, black or distressed gold. All are available for the same price. Custom framing is also available for an additional charge.

Intaglios

Originally used as seals, these carvings or cuttings are moulded out of white plaster. Now done as reproductions, the original Intaglios (19th c), were also made from ivory, wood, or stone The depressed designs depicting ancient scenes from Greece, Italy etc were also once used as markers of ones land. They were also collected as souvenirs from European Grand Tours in the 1830's. Today , these little cameos can be framed decoratively . Our intaglios here at CSM are based on a set from 1900 and they are unusually large. They are framed in either brown or silver moulding with a cream or beige background. A series of these makes a great statement.

Kips Bay 38th Annual Decorator Showhouse, 2010

I managed to get in a day before the show closed! (Nov 11). Always a source for inspiration for me, this years' showhouse was held in a 71st street townhouse that spanned 6 stories with a beautiful spiral staircase leading up to the top floor. Designed by Jennifer Post, the 6th floor was probably my favorite floor. The comfortable , yet sophisticated, sleek and modern home theater room on one side, his and her massage tables and meditation/yoga area on the other side. Two sets of french doors lead out to a rooftop oasis overlooking the streets of Manhattan below. Ample and comfortable seating areas for entertaining or relaxing. I could manage up there just fine. (No kitchen necessary).

Another favorite spot of mine was this amazing art installation along the stairwell.

TIN TYPES , Recapturing the Past

We are so excited to be exhibiting these little gems. Just in are small photographic plates in aluminum (not Tin) . These Tin Type plates are all created in the camera , not from negatives , so they are all uniques. The process is done by chemically transferring the images in a dark room. We are displaying them both framed and unframed. The unframed pieces can be set on an easel and/or encased in a glass cloche to display on a table or mantle. These works have both a vintage feel and yet can also have a modern esthetic.

Mr . Brainwash, "ICON REMIX" , NYC

Last weekend, I finally got in to see a very interesting open gallery exhibit in NY's Meat Packing district.
The controversial documentarian and videographer turned street and pop artist, Thierry Guetta from France, aka Mr. Brainwash , has created a body of work in a 15,000 square foot space downtown. His story is told in Bansky's 2010 film "Exit through the the Gift Shop". The massively hyped Pop Art Exhibit opened in May, closed, then reopened due to the overwhelming response. The street outside was even bathed in graffitti art by Guetta. He uses words in his massive paintings like "Beauty' and "Love" and depicts icons like Michael Jackson , Madonna, and Obama Superman. Huge Paint cans, and sculptures made from tire rubber and record vinyl are sprayed with bright paint and phrases. It is unknown when the show will come down so check it out soon at 415 W 13th Street.

Summer 2010 "Bottoms Up" , A Collection of Photographs by Pamela Rankin Smith on view at CSM

An accomplished NY photographer, Pamela Rankin Smiths' photos are on display at CSM Art & Frame this summer.
Pamela had borrowed her fathers Kodak Brownie Box camera when she was a little girl and has been taking pictures ever since! Mainly of people, her subjects ranged from animals to certain parts of animals. She once found her shaggy white dog climbing into a rural mailbox where a bone was hidden...it took off from there. She took endless rear end shots of hippos , elephants, you name it! Aptly named, her series ended up being called "Asses" now, "Bottoms Up."
As her works progressed she studied with Ansel Adams and George Rice at the International Center for Photography in NY. Her work began improving in technique and in expression. Some of her exhibitions include Nikon House, the NY Camera club and the Overseas Press Club.

CSM is pleased to be showing Pamela's works for a limited time . All pieces are for sale.

Also on view through the summer:: Seascape pastels and small works by Danielle Mick, framed vintage seaweed from the 19th c., shells, shells, shells...

What a great night! CSM Art & Frame, hosted a Summer Photo Auction for LOVE in the studio space in Chatham. The 20+ photos generously donated by various local photographers brought in over $2000 for LOVE! The money we raised will help to fund the LOVE leadership camp in August. Even better we raised awareness to this fantastic organization! Moving forward, CSM will donate a portion of the framing for any photos purchased that evening (or through a LOVE event) back to LOVE.

Recently, CSM Art & Frame has taken to the fashion scene in the form of art. Just in are photographs depicting Gucci billboards , Prada monuments (Marfa, Tx), Limited Edition Barbie Fashion Prints. Vintage Designer Gown Sketches, and one of a kind paintings on paper from a former shoe designer in NY. All fresh takes on traditional artwork for Spring. Some are framed , some are unframed and ready to customize with your own personal style. Also, just in are silver and pink glitter frames, very girly indeed, as well as floral frames from Larson Juhl and colorful lacquered burl wood frames to really make the artwork funky. If the vanity or powder room is the place of choice to hang these pieces we also do custom mirrors in antique finishes as well as traditional bevel mirrors in a variety of sizes and frame selections.

This Thursday, May 6th is the 38th Annual Calvary House Tour in Summit, NJ. It is sponsored by the Women of Calvary Episcopal Church in Summit. The tour provides an opportunity to view design trends and styles in some of the community's most wonderful homes. The event helps to raise funds for some of the many programs and outreach initiatives of the church. There will be 5 homes to view on the tour and box lunches are also available. I have had the pleasure over the years to work with one of the homeowners on the tour. The home is located on Summit Ave. A quick look around for me the other day and I recall all the various projects we worked on the house over the years. From framing up family photos , to custom mirrors, antique architectural drawings, actual framed seaweed from the 18th c.. In my travels, I am always on the lookout for special little paintings that I know they always appreciate. Transforming them with frames is always refreshing. The home is a grand center hall Georgian brick colonial with lots of light and lots of good taste! Some photos below ... definitely recommend a stop on the tour to Summit Ave.

April 21, 2010: The highly anticipated LOVE event in New York at the Mutual of America Building, which was the sponsoring host for the event. Leave Out Violence (LOVE) was created in 1993 to reduce and help eliminate violence in the lives of youth and their communities by initiating a movement of youth spokespeople who communicate a message of non-violence. Patrons poured in eager to view all the amazing photography donated by the youth members, and the contributing professional photographers. William Wegman, Patrick Harbon (photographer for the iconic image of Springsteen) and May Pang (photographer who did the legendary John Lennon piece ) were among some of the amazing photographers who donated works for the LIVE bidding. The bidding got heated towards the end of the night with the live bidding far exceeding anyones expectations! Craig Treadway of CW11 morning news was the Master of Ceremonies. There was a special appearance by Willie Geist, one of the hosts of MSNBC Morning Joe, who also was the Auctioneer in the Live Auction.

The Auction is a great venue to be able to purchase some wonderful photographs and benefit New York Citys' Troubled Youths. CSM ART & FRAME will be donating a percentage of framing sales on photos purchased at the auction back to LOVE. An Unconventional Valentines Day

My husband and I have wanted to get to the King Spa located in Palisades Park, NJ. We knew we needed to have a block of time to experience it and thought Valentines Day might be a good time to relax and enjoy some spa treatments. This is not a traditional spa at a fancy hotel. This is an authentic Korean Spa with some very interesting ways to enter into your wellness state of zen. There is an entrance fee to get in and use the facilities which include Steam, Saunas and Showers. In addition, you can choose from various services listed ( charges vary) including massage (back , shoulder, feet) as well as the infamous body scrub. There are numerous wet and dry saunas dating back to ancient times with specific healing properties. It took some time to get acclimated. They give you a "uniform" to wear while you are there, as well as a towel and locker. There are juice bars and a Korean restaurants to enjoy while you are there. I must say it is not for everyone. Check out the website and see for yourself! We came home enriched from a truly unique experience and feeling well rested and ready to head back in the very near future.

Even though you think you don't "own" a fine art collection, there are loads of "works" around the house just calling out to be framed. Kids' artwork left in their folders, beautiful pieces of fabric or wallpaper you may have collected over the years, matchbooks from your favorite restaurants. Amassing the collection into a gallery wall is the challenge. Here are a few arrangements that caught my eye.

The Pollack-Krasner House

Back in November, my husband and I spent a weekend in the Hamptons. We finally got to visit Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasners' former home and studio in East Hampton. I strongly recommend the visit. These were two of America's foremost Abstract Expressionist painters. The couple moved out there from NYC in 1945 and it is fascinating to see the actual barn where Pollock created his most influential body of work. They had their share of difficult times and the tour really captures all aspects of their lives together. Pollocks life ended tragically in a car crash with his mistress, Ruth Kligman. Upon return from the trip, we watched the movie Pollock, starring Ed Harris as the artist. It was a perfect way to "complete" the tour.

Relaxing inside while the boys shoveled us out from under all the snow we got last night! So happy to have a weekend like this...end of year organizing, NY Times, the fireplace was going, cup of hot chocolate. Later in the day , my son begged me to take him sledding at the big hill in town. Under duress, I decided to get all bundled up and go along for the ride. My husband and son convinced me to have a turn. Of course that's me, always resisting! I finally agreed to go , but only once!...got on the sled and off we went! A loud scream.. I must say that it was a total blast and I felt like a kid again. It has happened numerous times to me (Roller Skating, Snow mobiling...) I always resist going and once pushed realize that sometimes you must step outside the comfort zone and let go!
